Overview of Productions

Sanctioned film and television productions at the UCF-NSCM Film and Mass Media Program are prompted by applied projects or directed research and must take place under direct faculty oversight while you are enrolled in a course, study, or during thesis hours.

Policies and Procedures

Please visit the Policies and Procedures page for official agreement forms to use with cast, crew, and locations as well as to make insurance certificate requests for locations and third-party vendors. Students are expected to read and understand the NSCM-FMM Student Production Handbook. It explains the who, what, when, why, and how to get things done in a professional production environment.

Master Production Calendar

When scheduling your production, there are key operational deadlines and time periods you must adhere to. Use the Master Production Calendar below to keep appraised of these dates.

Production Periods:

  • Production Seasons are scheduled time periods when sanctioned productions take place during the Fall and Spring semesters. These are windows of opportunity when all production services are made available. These seasons are very demanding resource “sprints” that do not remain open year long. There is a limited amount of production slots for each week of the production season. Student are expected to work with faculty and operations staff to schedule their productions accordingly.
  • Grey Periods are times during the academic year when the availability of production services is limited.
  • Blackout Periods are times during the academic year when student productions are not permitted to take place.

Rotate your device to landscape when viewing this calendar on your phone or tablet.

Production Forms

Use these template forms to help your properly prepare, organize, and document your production process. Many courses will require you to use some of these documents to complete assignments and projects.

Cast and Crew

Most of you will be dipping directly into the network of talent cultivated around you in your classes and while working on various projects, but for those of you who may need help finding talented actors and able crew we provide a central casting database and a student film jobs board to assist.

Need to obtain a production permit and/or request permission conduct production activities in a public space? Please be sure to read the Location Permits section of the UCF-NSCM-FMM Student Production Handbook as it provides a detailed framework to help guide you. When in doubt, it is always best to reach out to the appropriate office to determine if you will need a permit, and/or additional oversight and permissions (i.e. police, park rangers, private interests, etc.), as it is very dependent on the type of project, its scale, and the desired location of the production.

UCF Office of Communications

Students must contact the UCF Office of Communications when planning productions-of-scale on the UCF main campus and outside of the NSCM Film and Mass Media Production Facilities. Film/TV productions generated by campus noncommercial requests, such as for class assignments, internal use and departmental projects, are permitted on campus but they must seek prior approval if they wish to take place at busy exterior spaces, inside certain campus buildings, and are of a particular size or type. Fees may be charged depending on the extent of the request and its impact on campus activities.

Electronic news gathering activities by students on campus is permitted, but certain campus buildings, residence halls, and offices may be restricted and may require prior clearance to photograph or conduct interviews.

We try to provide as many of the resources you’ll need to complete your projects, but sometimes, depending on the scale of your production, what we have to offer just isn’t enough. In the event you require additional resources here are some vendors and other service providers that you can utilize to help fill the gaps.
